ABOUT THE SHOW
I Nuovi Professiona &Dreamgirls is a Broadway musical with music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen. Based on the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson and many others, the musical follows the rise to prominence of a young singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called ‘The Dreams’ who become superstars in the music arena.
The musical opened on December 20, 1981 at the Imperial Theatre and was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards (including Best Musical) and won six. Twenty five years later, it was adapted into a major motion picture by DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures.
Dreamgirls The Musical was first staged in 1981 under the direction of Michael Bennett on Broadway, New York. The musical revolves around the era between the late 1960s to 1980s and tells the tale of the journey of ‘The Dreams’, a black female singing group. The main protagonist in the musical is Effie White (originally played by Jennifer Holliday, and then by Jennifer Hudson in the 2006 release).
Dreamgirls The Movie was released in 2006 and boasted a vast spectrum of international superstars including Beyoncé Knowles (Deena Jones), Jennifer Hudson (Effie White), Eddie Murphy (as James Early Thunder) and Jamie Foxx (Curtis) amongst many others. BROADWAY ACADEMY has been given full rights to stage Dreamgirls in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
